Brian Watkins, PR Manager of Social Media at Omniture, Leads Utah
Technology Council (UTC) Clinic on Adapting to and Implementing a
Successful Social Media Strategy
SALT LAKE CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Twitter, Facebook
and FriendFeed are just a few
of the tactics discussed at a recent Utah
Technology Council (UTC) peer-to-peer clinic on social media in
public relations. The clinic, lead by Brian Watkins, PR Manager of
Social Media at Omniture,
together with Snapp Conner PR,
allowed marketing and public relations experts to openly discuss the
utility of new media in a Web 2.0 world.
“Many people are intimidated by the thought of
creating a company blog or adopting a social media strategy because they
think they’ll lose the ability to control
their message,” said Brian Watkins, PR Manager
of Social Media at Omniture. “What people need
to understand is that these types of media also open avenues for better
client/customer relationships and communication.”
Watkins shared excerpts from Omniture’s
framework for social media, which included five major points of interest:
-
Monitor your brand online
-
Respond where necessary
-
Influence the thought leaders
-
Publish your own relevant content
-
Measure your social media efforts
“While it’s
important to understand new media in a business setting, you should also
know that it’s not for everyone,”
said Watkins. “Starting a blog is very time
consuming and it’s difficult to measure
success. There can also be legal implications that will need to be
explored.”
According to Watkins, many traditional media editors are using new media
like Facebook and Twitter, where they can quickly establish themselves
as experts and influence people in a more social setting. When done
correctly, companies can engage in a dialogue that can turn even staunch
opponents into strong supporters and proponents of your company or
product. These supporters then act, in turn, as reliable third-party
endorsements by providing word-of-mouth recommendations.
The P2P clinic was part of the UTC’s ongoing
mission to encourage business and government leaders to make Utah an
even more vibrant, attractive, and rewarding place for technology
companies to do business. For more information about the UTC please
