Livescribe Pulse™ Smartpen Heads Back to School
Pulse Smartpen: Essential Tool Helps Students Capture Notes and Audio for Easy Recall
College & University Pressroom
OAKLAND, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Students heading to college this fall face many pressures associated
with keeping up in class – from note taking to
studying to keeping organized and even prioritizing deadlines. This
year, they can alleviate some of the classroom stress with the Pulse
smartpen from Livescribe, Inc. (www.livescribe.com).
The Pulse smartpen is a computer within a pen that captures handwriting
and simultaneously records audio and synchronizes it to the writing.
Users simply tap on their notes to replay what was recorded from the
exact moment they were writing, so they never miss a word they hear,
write, or speak. Using pre-printed controls at the bottom of the dot
paper notebooks, students can fast forward, rewind, jump ahead, pause or
even speed up or slow down the audio recordings to easily access
information from a lecture or study group.

Using a USB docking cradle, students can upload their notes and audio
into their computers to save, search for keywords or share with friends
and classmates. Every registered Pulse user receives 250MB of online
storage to upload and share notes and audio as interactive Flash movies
or PDF files. Users can choose to e-mail or share their interactive
notes – termed “pencasts”
– through the Livescribe community, selected
contacts or other sites like Facebook.

What Professors are Saying
Dr. Andy Van Schaack, Vanderbilt University professor and Livescribe
adviser, suggests that the smartpen has a significant impact in the
classroom. “Because of the fast pace of most
lectures, students usually have to decide whether they listen to the
lecture or focus on taking accurate notes—they
can’t do both well. With the smartpen they
can take fewer notes knowing that they can go back to them later and
replay the audio,” said Van Schaack. “As
a teacher, I’ve discovered Pulse is less
distracting than students who take notes using a laptop computer.”
Availability and Pricing
Pulse is available in two models. Priced at $149, the 1GB model provides
storage for over 100 hours of recorded audio. At $199, the 2GB model
doubles the storage capacity and provides more flexibility for
downloading future applications. Accessories for the Pulse smartpen are
available including a leather case or two-pack of journals available in
black or red.
Pulse is available in the electronics section at Target stores
nationwide, as well as Amazon.com, Livescribe.com and major campus
