The Root Launches “The Browntable” Blog
A Daily Digest of Politics, Culture, and Controversy from Writers at
The Root
WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The
Root, an online magazine featuring perspectives from prominent and
emerging black thought leaders, today announced it has launched a
political roundtable called “The Browntable,” a blog for smart reporting
and analysis on politics, culture, media and the top arguments,
amusements and provocations of the day.
Since its launch, The Browntable has added new voice and nuance to the
political web. Washington reporter Dayo Olopade was one of the first to
speak with environmentalist Van Jones, after he was tapped by the White
House to join its new green jobs initiative. Politics and policy
reporter Kai Wright wrote against the grain, criticizing Obama’s popular
AIDS czar pick as “so 1996.” And political satirist David Swerdlick
sounded off on the continued fallacy of the US war on drugs, the same
week that Obama named a new drug czar.
“The Browntable allows The Root to inject important black voices and
perspectives to the dominant political discussions in real time,” said
Lynette Clemetson, Managing Editor of The Root. “We put an emphasis on
moving the conversation forward with quick, witty, insightful takes that
engage our diverse audience as well as anyone interested in pop and
politics.”
Dayo Olopade, Kai Wright, and David Swerdlick will anchor the daily
conversation, with regular contributions from other writers from The
Root and well known political and media figures. Rep. Maxine Waters
recently contributed a guest post in response to Wright’s call for more
answers to the controversy swirling around the California politician’s
relationship to Boston- based OneUnited Bank.
Olopade will focus primarily on politics, environment, religion and the
Obama administration. Wright will focus on health care, the housing
crisis and economic issues. Swerdlick will focus on the intersection of
politics and pop culture.
