CMO Event logoSMP: What is your name,and what do you do there for CMO Event?

John Funnell (JF): Marketing director at Global Business Events.

SMP: Briefly, tell us about CMO Event (for those that don’t know), what is it and what does the event strive to do?

JF: The new era of digital, social and mobile, has given rise to a new breed of consumer. More than ever before the customer has found their voice and they are using it! With the direction of our CMO community we have identified the key game changers that have come into play and will flip the traditional marketing role on its head.

From Big data, the biggest game changing opportunity since the internet went mainstream, to Mobile, predicted to be 2014s biggest game changer with smartphone penetration hitting record levels in the UK alone, to Social media which influences 93% of shoppers buying decisions, add advertising, personalisation, brand loyalty, automation, data security and CRM to the mix and you have a major CMO headache!

The CMO Event aims to facilitate discussions with Europe's leading marketing executives, around these key game changers and address how companies can adopt and implement the latest trends and technologies to constantly connect and engage with their customers.

SMP: Who are your target audience and why?

JF: CMOs, marketing directors, head of digital, content, brand and social media.

SMP: What are the challenges that you’ve encountered and how are you overcoming them in what you have been doing so far at CMO Event?

JF: It is a launch event leveraged out of years of success in the IT space.

SMP: What are the high moments of what you have been doing so far?

JF: Speaking to the CMOs of Europe's leading brands.

SMP: What are the main social channels are you using, why and which are the most effective for CMO Event?

JF: Most of our traction is coming from Linkedin, Twitter @cmoevent and hashtag #cmoevent.

SMP: How do you think the role of the CMO has changed over the last three years and why do you think that is?

JF: SaaS has given the CMO greater influence on IT decisions.

Digital marketing has liberalised the skills set required to work in marketing (entry level). This presents new challenges in people management and the level of process to manage them.

SMP: What do you think will change heading into 2015 and why?

JF: As a marketing director within the events industry I hope that companies will continue to value human interaction over cold automation.

SMP: Is there anything else we should know, or is there anything that you’d like to share?

JF: The CMO Event is not just a day out of the office, it is a community to join that offers constant peer engagement throughout the year

SMP: What’s the first thing you do when you get into the office of a morning?

JF: Say hello (with a smile) to every member of staff individually and have a brief chat.

SMP: If you had a superpower what would it be and why (I am really hoping that you don’t say flying, but we’ll see)?

JF: Telekinesis
