Social network hi5 adds iLike and Qloud music applications via OpenSocial

Rachel Hawkes (Social Media Portal) - 22 December 2007

Popular social networking site, hi5 announced the introduction of two new music applications thanks to Google's OpenSocial.

The applications, courtesy of collaborations with iLike and Qloud will allow users to add more music to their hi5 profile.  hi5 were one of the first social networking sites to announce their intent to work with OpenSocial, and the introduction of said music applications will be the first using the open-source technology to go live on hi5.

The applications are said to link hundreds of thousands of artists globally with hi5's 70 million plus registered users.  The applications also deliver localised content, improved functionality and search features.

Hi5 CEO and co-founder, Ramu Yalamanchi praises OpenSocial for making it simple for developers to create useful, engaging and fun applications.  “We are very pleased to increase the depth of our music offering for our members around the world, making it easier for them to find, listen to and post more of the music they like on their hi5 profiles.”

Users adopting the iLike application will be able to post songs and videos on their profiles.  Artists can create a profile on the iLike website which will then enable them to connect with social networking users on multiple sites without the need to create independent profiles on each network.  The iLike Universal Artist Dashboard application connects artists to users on hi5, Facebook and Bebo - in addition to those using the iLike website directly.

Ali Partovi, CEO of iLike says, “We are thrilled to offer artists and fans the ability to connect on hi5, a massive social networking site.  Artists can now post songs and videos once via iLike’s Universal Artist Dashboard and reach a potential additional audience of more than 70 million music fans.”

The Qloud My Music application will be provide hi5 users the opportunity to immediately play entire songs and videos from iTunes directly from their hi5 profile.  According to the press release issued by hi5 on the 20th of December, My Music allows users (legally) to see and play their friends iTunes libraries in addition to exchanging playlists, browse the most popular songs among their social groups and add friends songs to their hi5 profile.

Mike Lewis, Qloud's co-founder comments, "international markets provide great growth potential for services built on social networks, and we anticipate that hi5's strong global brand and loyal user base will deliver an effective environment for generating new My Music fans around the globe."

Qloud's My Music is also available on Bebo, Friendster and Facebook.

The iLike and Qloud music applications will not fully launch until the end of January 2008.  iLike application will be available in both Spanish and English. Hi5 is one of the more popular online community sites in Spanish speaking countries.
