Australian tourism body offer £70k for island blog


Tourism Queensland unveil blog job to promote Great Barrier Reef group of Islands

An Australian state tourism body, Queensland Tourist Board, has launched a new initiative to raise the profile of the Whitsunday Islands as a tourism destination.

The campaign is aimed at international travellers in 18 countries, and is aiming to lure them by offering a £70,000 GBP job for a few hours a week feeding turtles and scuba diving.  The dream job, of just 12 hours per month for a six month period, offers free rent in exchange for general caretaking, island watching and publishing a weekly online blog, photo and video diary to journal their time on the island.

Jonathan Sloan of Tourism Queensland in the UK exclaimed that it was undoubtedly the best job in the world.  He went on to say, “It has everything most people dream of – white sandy beaches, blue skies, warm seas and friendly people.  It also boasts a generous salary package and requires only a few hours of relaxed work with minimum effort per week.”

Additional duties for the successful candidate will be giving media interviews and email reports to Tourism Queensland.  Requirements for the job include excellent communication skills and good written and verbal English.

Tourism Queensland’s chief executive officer, Anthony Hayes explained that the job was being offered to promote the Whitsunday Island’s across the globe.  “The campaign aims to highlight the islands of the Great Barrier Reef and showcase Australia’s unique island experience to the global market.”

Interested job seekers are asked to film a 60 second video explaining why they are the best person for the job, which is to be uploaded directly to the Queensland Tourist Board’s website.  The selection process will be whittled down to eleven candidates who will be flown to Hamilton Island for the final decision in early May 2009.
