53% of Global Mobile Phone Users Share Mobile Video

Majority of People Most Often Watch Movie Trailers on Phones Versus TV, Desktop or in the Theater; Romantic Trailers Are Most Shared While Superheroes Take #2 Spot

MILPITAS, CA--(Marketwired) - Vuclip, the world's largest independent mobile video and media company, today released its second quarter 2013 Global Video Insights. This quarterly report shines a spotlight on mobile video sharing, how and what people share, the most popular movie trailers, and the most searched for celebrities.

Trends in Sharing

The survey of more than 14,000 respondents globally reveals that huge numbers of people across the world are sharing mobile video. 53% of total respondents say they share mobile video with mobile users in India leading the charge at 65%. And when you slice this by age, 79% of the under-18 crowd worldwide reports sharing video through mobile phones.

How they share varies most by age but also by region. Overall, 20% of people globally say they share mobile video via SMS with Google+ and Facebook tied for second place, each at around 12%. This number climbs to 52% for those under 18 years old. However, it's notable that in the U.S., Facebook is the most popular means of sharing, perhaps due to the high proliferation of smartphones.

Also notable is that although 4% of people worldwide say that Twitter is the most common way they share mobile video, that core group of tweeters is extremely active. Vuclip estimates that the percentage of videos viewed sparked by tweets is in the ballpark of 30% of the total daily video views on Vuclip.

Movie Trailers

48% of respondents globally said they view movie trailers on their phones more often than on television, on desktop computers or even in movie theaters. They all seem to have one thing in common; they enjoy watching and sharing movie trailers. Interestingly though, romantic movie trailers are most often shared. This preference changes when viewed by country, gender or even age. For example, movie trailers for superhero movies are hugely popular with the under-18 crowd and big in India in general. This is followed closely by action movie trailers.

"On Vuclip, we give users all the tools they need to first enjoy mobile video content and to then share it immediately. More than 65% of video views occur as a result of social sharing," said Arun Prakash, Chief Operating Officer of Vuclip. "However, what's surprising about the data we uncovered was how engaged people are with movie trailers. For example, we saw a huge up-tick in views of the Iron Man 3 movie trailer the week prior to the international movie release in late April. There is an appetite globally for Hollywood cinema and celebrities."

Top Celebrities

While there are clear macro global trends in mobile video sharing, sharing methods and the type of content shared, the specific celebrities people search for reveal preferences that are for the most part regional. For example, here are the top celebrities searched for in the U.S., India and Indonesia in the second quarter of this year.

Methodology
All of the statistics in this report were gathered via a global survey conducted over two days. There were more than 14,000 respondents. Users were provided with seven multiple-choice questions and had the option to opt out. No incentives were provided for responding. To see full survey results please view this link. The information for the celebrity searches is a result of our ability to collect anonymous information about what users are searching for, what country they're in, and what devices they're using. When we aggregate that data, it makes for a compelling snapshot of trends in the mobile world.
