Have you ever wondered how much it costs to build a particular roadway? Do you want to know whether the government has made plans for an emergency, even a zombie apocalypse? These are all RTI requests that Indian citizens have actually filed.

The Right to Information Act (2005) enables any citizen to request information from the government. Yet relatively few people actually use the process. Many citizens feel that it is too complicated or that it requires too much effort. YouRTI.in makes the process as easy as posting a comment on a website. YouRTI.in already contains contact details for over 2000 public information officers in the central government, and more are being added.

"YouRTI.in enables people to seek information from the government effortlessly. Whether it is a question that someone has been pondering for a while or it's something new that occurs to them on the way home, YouRTI.in can help get a response. It empowers any citizen to become an RTI activist, while protecting their anonymity if they so wish," said Sushil Kambampati, founder of YouRTI.in.

"The idea for YouRTI.in was born out of an interest in government transparency and accountability, and the belief that ordinary citizens can effect change," Kambampati added.

In addition, YouRTI.in offers India's many civic-minded RTI activists the facility to upload their archives of responses. YouRTI.in will classify and categorize the responses, extract the text, and make them searchable.

The service is free to all individuals. News organizations, research institutes and legal firms that want advanced search and bulk download capabilities will need to subscribe.

YouRTI.in will also benefit the government by allowing people to see whether the information they seek has already been requested, thus cutting down on multiple requests for the same information.
